We practically get asked this question 40 times each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s no issue for us to answer the questions but after they ask and get a response, 95% of the time, we never hear from them again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I wonder why that is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">More importantly, why is there an assumption that software <em>should be<\/em> free?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Before I continue, I just want to say that we have nothing against free. You also get a full 30-day trial of Pro and once that is over, you only get downgraded to the free plan. That means you can still get to understand the system on your own time without paying for anything. We know your schedule is \u201ctoxic\u201d and that\u2019s why the free plan is there, to enable you to fully test the app until you are ready to upgrade to the unlimited version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That being cleared up, another question that\u2019s more specific comes to mind.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Why is SeriousMD Not Free\u2026 Like Other Apps?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">First of all. If you have this question in your mind, I have a better question: &#8220;<em>W<\/em><i>hy are these apps free in the first place?&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you give it time to sink in, you probably have a lot of answers already. You can start with this adage, to begin with:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1802 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product.png\" alt=\"when something online is free, you're not the customer, you're the product wallpaper\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product.png 1600w, https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product-1024x682.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If that still doesn&#8217;t show you how some app developers offer their products &#8220;for free&#8221;, though, here are a list of possible reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">The developers sell your data and make money off of that (<strong>because they always have costs and they need to cover them<\/strong>). Not good when you consider your legal obligations to your patients about their data&#8217;s privacy.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The app is just a pet project and they will just drop you once they lose interest in the app (unfortunately, it happens often).<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The developer doesn&#8217;t offer backups (that costs money) so you are on your own with your data. If you lose your device, it&#8217;s gone for good.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">They don&#8217;t sync (that also costs money to make, maintain and work) so you are stuck with just a single device or computer and can\u2019t access your data when you need it.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">They have zero support (you are on your own if something glitches).<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">There are zero updates after the first release (check when it was released).<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">They cannot export your data at all (once the OS is higher, the app won\u2019t work anymore and your data will be lost).<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">It&#8217;s probably a dead app already (just check their update logs for when their last update was).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Worst of all, <strong>these free apps are definitely not secure.\u00a0<\/strong>Why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Well, simple logic:\u00a0it costs money to maintain and secure servers, safeguard the data, monitor for intrusions, etc. If the developers are offering their app for free, where could the money be coming for <a href=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/data-and-security\">such security measures<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Answer: nowhere, because there isn&#8217;t any security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Most of the problems above were actually mentioned to us by doctors who experienced them with free apps and have since moved over to SeriousMD.\u00a0If you look at the banner to this post, you&#8217;ll see the acronym TNSTAAFL: <strong>there&#8217;s no such thing as a free lunch<\/strong>. It&#8217;s all about making money in ways the user (you!) doesn&#8217;t immediately see.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Just like you having operational costs to run your practice, software companies have fixed costs as well. Contrary to what the news shows to everybody, most software companies are boot-strapped and the staff are not playing video games and napping in the office all the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That leads to the next common question\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Why is SeriousMD Not a One-Time Fee?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">OK, you might be thinking:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>&#8220;I paid for an app just once before.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>\u201cI just bought software that\u2019s a one-time fee.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">SeriousMD is a business-level software. The cost of keeping it up would go far beyond the initial fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That&#8217;s why apps with 1-time fees tend to stop support early on. You will also need to shell out a bigger amount up-front when you first purchase the software <b>and <\/b>again when they decide to offer an update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, now you might be thinking:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>&#8220;But I&#8217;ve bought business software before, and it was NOT a subscription. \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>\u201cI can still buy a one-time fee system from a developer\/vendor right now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">OK, how much did you pay up-front? It was a lump sum, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now, factor in how long you used it before it broke down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Did the company or person offer you support? You still had to pay them to come and check, right? And then pay a separate fee to fix and update it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>OR\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You probably signed a maintenance contract. They also see more patients due to <a href=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/how-practices-can-easily-reduce-no-shows-by-over-35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automated reminders to patients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They also get home in time for their family and hobbies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>How much are those worth to you?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As you can see, the subscription is tiny compared to the benefits you get.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A fully free EMR won\u2019t be able to give you those.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A fully free EMR software or a free EMR system that\u2019s not reliable will just frustrate you. You\u2019ll just end up regretting it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you&#8217;re using a free EMR and something goes wrong, how much will that cost you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">How about paper records? Think about <a href=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/paper-medical-records\/\">the costs of keeping paper records<\/a>. You waste time filing, retrieving is stuck in a clinic so you always have to make a call if a patient visits you in another clinic and storage is a pain. Think about the space you are wasting that could be used for patient happiness or patient education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, if you\u2019re thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/seriousmd.com\/blog\/paper-charts-to-electronic-medical-records\/\">switching from paper to EMR<\/a> but still worrying about subscription costs vs using a free app, this article should make it pretty clear. There\u2019s really no advantage to using a completely free EMR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>In fact, there&#8217;s no such thing as a completely free EMR. <\/strong>The costs come out of places you just don&#8217;t think to look&#8230; like your practice&#8217;s future, or the safety of its records.
